Earlier this year, we presented a “KM Conversation” with knowledge management evangelist and expert Stan Garfield. “Gamification Accelerates KM Adoption” focused on using proven gamification techniques to encourage active participation in KM initiatives and venues. Earning membership in a “Circle of Excellence” can be a powerful knowledge exchange incentive.
Stan Garfield put forward the idea of earning membership in a “Circle of Excellence” that acknowledges and rewards overall knowledge sharing. The example below makes very clear which tasks/roles are the most important, and which are valued most in terms of points awarded.
- Contributor – 5 points
- Innovator – 2 points
- Recycler – 5 points
- Collaborator – 5 points
- Learner – 10 points
- Expert – 2 points
Per Mr. Garfield, you definitely need simple transparency in any KM scoring system. His advice: “Keep it simple, make it transparent. Let people see “I did X and I got Y.”” To inspire healthy competition, you may want to show a leader board to everyone, and then let people see the breakdown of exactly how they earned their own points. When you publicly recognize individuals, explain exactly why they won. There should be no mystery to the process.
